Analysis of the structure and volume of dental care provided to children in the Russian Federation from 2019 to 2024

Abstract

Dental medical care is one of the most common types of care for the adult and child population in any country in the world. The number of visits by children to medical organizations that provide dental care and the structure of visits to dental specialists are analyzed annually to plan the activities of the dental service for the following years. In 2020, the world was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which, according to the literature, had a significant negative impact on the provision of dental care to children and adults worldwide. In Russia, studies on the impact of the pandemic on the volume and structure of dental care for children are rare and focus on specific regions. The purpose of this study is to analyze the dynamics of changes in the volume and types of dental care for children in 84 regions of the Russian Federation from 2019 to 2024.
Materials and methods.
As part of the activities of the National Medical Research Center for Dentistry, an analysis of the reporting documentation of 84 regions of the Russian Federation (excluding Moscow, the Lugansk People’s Republic, the Donetsk People’s Republic, the Kherson Region, and the Zaporizhzhia Region) was conducted on the main areas of dental service activities for 2019—2024, and the dynamics of changes in the studied indicators were presented.
Results.
An analysis of the structure of dental care provided to children in 84 regions of the Russian Federation from 2019 to 2024 revealed a predominance of primary specialized dental care. At the same time, there was an increase in primary specialized medical care (the number of dentists increased by 48.39%, the number of pediatric dentists increased by 9.45%, and by 2024, the percentage of regions providing orthodontic care increased by 174.22%) and a decrease in primary pre-medical care (the number of dentists decreased by 24.78%). Visits to children’s dentists dominated in the structure of visits to medical organizations providing medical care in the field of dentistry. The COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the provision of dental care to children in the Russian Federation. In 2020, compared to 2019, there was a decrease in the number of visits to medical organizations providing medical care in the field of dentistry, both nationally (by 28.5%) and in all federal districts of the Russian Federation. During this period, there were changes in the structure of dental care provided to the pediatric population, and there was a significant increase in visits to dental surgeons in 2020 and 2021 (by 11.19% and 1.15%, respectively).
Conclusions.
The results obtained indicate a trend towards an increase in the role of primary specialized care in the structure of dental care provided to the Russian child population over the period from 2019 to 2024 and an increase in the quality of dental care provided to children.
