Comparative analysis of therapeutic effects of terpenoid-containing vegetable agent and chlorhexidine in experimental parodontitis

Abstract

Modern parodontology needs new anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents with minimal side effects. The obective of the study was a comparative analysis of the therapeutic effect of chlorhexidine and a terpenoid-containing vegetable agent in experimental parodontitis. Experimental parodontitis was modeled in 72 outbred white rats, which were divided into 2 groups. The main group received therapeutic treatment with an aqueous solution of a terpenoid-containing vegetable agent (1:3) in the process of ultrasonic scaling (in the first day) and transmembrane dialysis (up to 11 days). The comparison group received ultrasonic scaling (in the first day) with a 0.06% chlorhexidine solution and applications of the «Hyaludent № 1» gel containing chlorhexidine (up to 11 days). The dynamics of parodontitis was studied by morphological methods. It was found that the terpenoid-containing agent does not irritate inflammatory tissues (in contrast to chlorhexidine). All the while this agent relieves secondary alteration, reduces the duration of the acute parodontitis period to 4 days, whereas chlorhexidine prolongs it to 11 days. The use of a terpenoid-containing agent during the recovery period of experimental periodontitis optimizes reparative processes, increases the proportion of restored tissues by 78% over 18 days whereas the use of chlorhexidine does it only by 45%.
