Comparative characteristics of the maxillofacial parameters of patients with β-thalassemia major and distal occlusion

Abstract

Patients with β-thalassemia major have a specific structure of the maxillofacial area and the need for orthodontic treatment of such patients is quite high. Parameters of profile cephalometric radiographs of patients with β-thalassemia major and patients with distal occlusion with insufficient mandibular development were compared. A contingent with a neutral occlusion (I class according to Angle) was examined in the control group. In patients with β-thalassemia major, an anomaly of class II was found, which is mainly interconnected with a decrease in the size of the mandible body length (Go-Gn; p<0.001) and a decrease in the height of the mandible ramus - Ar-Go. There was also noted a statistically significant increase in the angular parameters of NGoMe, NSL-ML, ML-NL, ArGoMe and angular values of Bjork, which indicates a predominantly vertical pattern of facial skeletal growth. An increase of cranial base angle NSBa in the main group indicates a slight decrease in the size of the cranium in patients with β-thalassemia major. In patients with β-thalassemia who are on regular blood transfusions, there is a decrease in the height of the ramus and the length of the mandible body, as well as a slight increase in the maxillary bone in the sagittal direction, which does not affect the position of the maxilla.
